Conversation Starters for Awkward Professional Moments

For now, here are our ready-to-use conversation starters for the professional moments that catch us off guard.

When you disagree with your boss in a meeting

"I want to make sure I understand the full picture , can you walk me through what's driving this decision?"

This buys you a beat, signals respect, and opens the door to sharing your view next.

When a colleague takes credit for your work

"I noticed the deck didn't mention the analysis I put together, can we make sure that's reflected when we present?"

This is not accusatory, and it keeps the fix simple.

When mission creep hits your plate

"Happy to take this on. Please help me understand what should move to make room for it?"

Turns "no" into a trade-off conversation instead of a refusal.

When you need to give a peer feedback they didn't ask for

"Can I share something I noticed? I think it could help how this lands with the team."

Asking permission first lowers the other person's defenses before you even start.

When you're put on the spot and don't know the answer

"That's a great question, let me get you a precise answer rather than guess. I'll follow up by [day]."

Protects your credibility without bluffing your way through it.

When you get talked over and need to re-enter the conversation

"I want to go back to the point I was making before we move on, it's relevant to the decision here."
